CSI: HUMBOLDT – Mendocino Purple Urkle Test Grow

The Quest for Purple

“Purple, the name and the colour, comes from a dye made from the mucus glands of a tropical sea snail, the murex (porphyra in Greek, purpura in Latin). This discovery is attributed to the Phoenician god Heracles, the guardian deity of the city of Tyre. One day his dog bit into a murex shell and its mouth immediately turned purple. His companion, the beautiful nymph Tyrus, declared she would sleep with the god only if he dyed her a garment in the same shade. Heracles obliged and the famous Tyrian purple dye was born.”

That moment of the birth of purple is portrayed in a 1636 Painting by Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens.

The Phoenicians were the first to lust after Purple, even their name comes from purple- ‘Phoenicia’ meaning ‘Land of Purple’.  The Egyptians sought it, the Greeks revered it, the Romans hoarded it and now I’m looking for that Purple.

Gogol Bordello – Start Wearing Purple

So in the hunt for Purple genetics two have always caught my eye, Mendocino purple aka Purps and Purple Urkle.  Nspecta with CSI: Humboldt has been on the boards for years, always been honest and detailed with his genetics.

When Nspecta crossed these two ladies together he made my decision easy, Mendocino Purple Urkle- Mendocino Purple (female) x Purple Urkle (reversed female).

The Greeks had a verb for someone thinking deeply “kalchaino”, the literal meaning of the term translated to ‘I search for the Purple fish’, so without further ado let’s kalchaino.

I started with a pack of 7 female seeds, 4 are at 26 days old and 3 at 16 days old.  All starts had nice fat leaves with deep serrations, all fairly slow vegging out of the gate.

Lets jump right in with a group shot then each individual.

Update at around 45 days in veg, All topped and cloned.  Pretty slow indica growth with a nice fat structure.  Very plump type vibe and digging the dark stems.  Up potted and under the MH for more growing up.

While topping clone #7, noticed she bleeds purple (ok more red), we have a bleeder.

All 7 of these girls are going into flower at around 3 months after pop, pretty slow veggers and wanted them at a decent size going in.  All have a very nice deep stank to rubs already.

All 7 in flower about 5 days, starting the stretch to the sun god. Smells and structure pretty uniform at this point with slight variations here and there. 2 main pheno’s I’m seeing, cartoon like round leaves and slightly less cartoon leaves.  I’m guessing the more rounded are the urkle leaners.  Smells are all purple skunky funk that I was after emanating throughout the room like body odor after a rub.

Steve approves…

While MJ chilled in my garden looking for Webster, I was explaining to him this is Urkel not Webster when I noticed the first hints of PURPLE. At only 14 days in flower and MPU #3 is already putting on her purple coat. Almost like a marker of purple on one site. MU #3 is one of the cartoon round leaf’s pheno’s I was thinking were Urkel leaner’s.

Mendo Purple Urkel day 14

Update on day 25 of flower.

Slow growers all the way around on these girls, but feel they are about to plump out with all that stored energy.  The 2 most bubble leafed plants are growing purple bud rather then changing to purple, while still having green leaflets. These all have a spaced out bud structure.  2 have a much larger leaf more typical WLD in shape with tighter bud site structure.

They are really starting to develop their smells which are each amazing! Urkle dom’s are more a candy grape skittles funk while the mendo doms have a little bit of a floral almost perfume type layer added. One of the girls has the most amazing Grape Gobstopper syrup smell that is one of the loudest smack you in the face smells I’ve ever encountered. On smells alone, I’m excited!

This one I thought was a Mendo Purp dom girl but now thinking she leaned Urkel day 28 flower
This is the one that has the most amazing smell!

Showing a bit of purple

Day 32 flower

Starting to add a bit of beef although again very slowly.  Smells are candy grape with that purple funk lurking in the back. One really reminds me of a purple kush I had a long time ago in structure. Really digging these, will bush with multiple tops next run with the keepers. Can already see the purple in 2 of the 5 urkle dom and mixed girls.

#1

The most purple so far & the one that reminds me of PK in structure so far

Really like the structure and smells from these next 2 ladies. Little bit quicker growth then the rest with a more intense layered smell.  Looking like they will yield a bit better then the others as well. #6 has the most smack you in the face tart grape gobstopper syrup type smell that is just intoxicating. Both are showing signs of purple.

Day 35 flower
#6: has the most smack you in the face tart grape gobstopper syrup type smell that is just just intoxicating

#7

3 plants have up turned fan leafs in the last week (week 5-6 flower). One plant turning over almost all of its fan leafs. I can’t recall ever seeing this trait on other any other genetics I’ve run.  I believe this trait comes from the Mendo Purps line.

day 35 or so flower

4 of 7 showing purple at this point. Starting to smell like skunky purple grapes in here.

More plumping up and more purple at day 40. Again these girls are slow growers, but as the turtle taught us its the finish that matters.

I have been looking for a nice purple strain for a long time, tried many seed with urkle, gorilla grape & gdp in the genes looking for what this batch is giving me. Grapey purple skunk candy in dense nuggets that continue to swell. Smells are amazing and loud, #6 is stunning in the smell department just crazy loud.

Day 40 flower
These 3 are very similar with round bud structure and candy grape skunk smells.
#2 putting on some good weight

#1 day 40

She really reminds me of Purple kush in structure. Has a nice rose color purple going on that I’m digging. Love how the purple comes from within the bud on all of these ladies.

Done a lot of digging and don’t see much on this flipping trait, most of her fans are flipped upside down at this point.

#1 day 40 smells are candy grape skunk but with a floral perfume appearing to round out the palate.

day 43 flower

These both are amazing plants, nice bud structure, blueish purple tones emanating from the bud itself & the amazing smells I’ve been searching for. Both checking all the boxes for a keeper purple beauty.

#6 The most amazingly loud smack you in the face smell I’ve encountered in a purple strain.

#7: getting plump and purpling

Update on the girls at day 48 flower

Looking good, smelling amazing, plumping up and purpling out.  Really liking the Mendo purp influence, if you have a chance to grab a cross with her, grab it.

Had to axe 1 girl #4, she was throwing some nanners around, only plant out of 7 with any signs of herm at all.

All have nice hard golf ball nugs starting to fill with purple. Smells are from candy grape to a layered perfume grape all bringing that purple skunky funk like a tuba.

#2 urkle dom day 48
really filling in and putting on decent weight(should be highest yielding), starting to see the purple showing up to the party slowly. Nice candy grape funk

#5 runt pheno day 48
only girl besides #4 that I’ll most likely cut out of the clone run.  Has a nice candy grape smell and look good but just too small and slow.

Flipper #1 day 48 flower
Still reminds me of PK, dig her. Grapey funk but with a floral perfume type action added.

#3 day 48
close to #1 in every way

#7  day 48
Amazing layered smells of candy grape, layered floral perfume & a great purple funk. Guessing she will be completely purple at chop. Stick to the wall golf ball nugs.

#6  day 48
Best loud, smack you in the face grape gobstopper syrup funk type smell!  Really starting to turn a dark purple and fill in very nicely.

Day 55 flower update

All looking good with more plumping and purpling.  While slow in growth, at least they are evenly slow throughout their lives, no catch up necessary.  The smells are amazingly delicious ranging from candy grape, deep funky skunk, syrup to perfume.  All showing purple, all but #5 changing really fast. Interesting the shades of purple from deep black purple to blueish purple to rose purple, very eye pleasing and not too sure it truly comes out in the pictures. Think I’ll take most of these around 65 days.

#2 day 55
Plumping out nice, will most likely yield the best. Slowly has purple creeping in.

#3 day 55
Both this one and #1 remind me of purple kush in structure.  This one has small rock hard nugs all the way down, very layered smells

#1 aka flipper day 55
Rock hard golf balls that have a rose purple color. Amped up version of #3

#7 day 55
The most intense purples and intense layered smells off her. This one candy grape with a floral skunk perfume backing.

#6 day 55
intense smells of tart grape gobstopper syrup, intense dark purpling.

We are rounding into the home stretch, starting to flush.  Would love to run these during the winter to really drop the temps.

#5 day 59
Not going to make the cut. Just like #2 but less in every catagory.

#2 day 59
Really plumped up very nicely and purpling at her own pace.  Straight Candy Grape with a deep and I mean deep skunky funk.  Will be the best yielder along with #6.  She may be a couple days shy of 59 too think she’s like 56 but keeping it simple for log.

#3  day 59
This girl is on the fence just for yield.  Quality is for sure there and may be kept for head stash jars.  Reminds me of purple kush with its layers of smells of grape, perfume, floral & funky skunk.  Real close match to #1

#1 day 59
amped up version of PK. Rose Purple golf balls covered in tricombs. Super layered smells that I cant wait to taste. She’s staying around for a clone run for sure.

#7  day 59
Purple from bud out, just dripping with trich’s.  Its the grape candy perfume skunky funk that makes my mouth water!

#6  day 59
Best smelling girl.  It really is super loud smack you in the face tart grape gobstopper syrup covering a funky skunk.  Darkest purpling of the bunch and will be one of the best yielders.

I wasn’t going to update until day 65 but #1 is off the charts. The shades of purple and layers of grape smells are beyond impressive in this line.  I was originally planing for about 65 days to harvest but looks like I’ll be right at 65-70 days.  Overall yields will be small with these although #2 & #6 are average and all can be bushed to make up for it.  Quality is top notch.  I have already started clone run with this line, smoke test will ultimately decide who’s sticking around.

#2 day 62
Candy Grape emanating from a deep skunk. Really plumped out and will be biggest yielding.

#3 day 62
grape perfume with layers of floral and skunk. Smaller girl but dense crusted nugs all with color.

#7 day 62
Right there with #6 as the most purple, with color emanating from bud out. Again smells are amazing, layered candy grape with sweet floral skunk perfume.

#6 day 62
Best smelling purple I’ve encountered.  Just loud and catches you off guard when you smell her. Tart grape gobstopper syrup in a bathtub with a skunk slowly soaking, most likely taking off that human smell.  She will yield out nicely with dense running nugs covering her entire stalk. Very dark purple shade, most purple of the bunch.

#1 aka flipper day 62
This girl is finishing up first. She has the most amazing pink/rose color purple hue on a old school purple kush frame.  Dense golfball sized nugs are just covered in a thick layer of trichs. The smells are the most perfumed of the bunch, with a sweet grape like floral perfume sticking with whatever she touches.  This girl makes you explain to your lady its just a plant.

Day 65 pics, taking them all down in the next 5 days or so with #3 & #1 coming down first.

Smells are only intensifying with a nice flush some developing yet another hash/incense type layer to go along with a already stacked scent profile. Grape (both the candy and tart variety), penetrating perfume, sweet floral sugar syrup & deep skunk with purple funk are all in there filling the room with every touch.

Low to average yields of perfectly dense purple nugs.

This is my first experience with Feminized seeds and was very positive so far.  For a production or headstash purple line to hold and love, this might be the line with great examples of purples with enough slight variation in growth and scents to keep multiples in a pack.

Time to see those purple flowers…

#7 day 65
amazing smells with grape skunk and layers of perfume, sweet floral and incense. Almost completely purple buds working its color inside out.

#2 day 65
This one is really finishing nice with purple seeping in. Smells are straight candy grape with a deep penetrating purple skunk backing.  Buds bulked out nicely enough to make her a average yielder given the proper veg time.

#1 day 65
Coming down at 65/66. Amazing penetrating perfume with grape, floral and incense/hash smells stick like super glue to whatever she touches. Super dense golf balls laden in a crystal coating on a purple kush structure.  She has a pinkish/ rose color purple hue that has a soft unique color appeal. Very unique lady

#6 day 65
Loudest smelling of the bunch with a Grape gobstopper syrup smack in the face with a glove that you were wearing while playing with a pet skunk kind of smell.  Darkest purple of the bunch with the buds having a blueish/purple to black hue. Dense bud clusters on a nice branch frame make her yield with #2. Will let her go a couple more days, I can’t wait for a winter run with acceptable temps outside to help the color.

Finished up a clone run of a couple of these for a second look. Dialed her in a bit more with lower feeding, bushing her out, better temps & heavy leaf defoliating on a couple of them. Running clones of #1, #6, #7 & #2. #1 & #6 were the smoke test winners but all these were pretty close with slight differences. Really digging #1

My keeper #1, flips some fan leaves at 30ish days in, first turning a shade of red then changing to a dark purple from bud out. Hard dense rocks of purple disco balls of funk, flavor and aroma like a fine boysenberry perfume incense

MPU #1
clone run day 63

#2 day 65 of the clone run.

all urkle with candy grape skunk for days with actually decent yields. Has a lighter lavender purple throughout and a dark purple creeping from within.

#7 day 65 of the clone run

A razzberry perfume incense type smell, almost all purple but might get cut due to high leaf ratio making her a pain to trim with lower yields.

#2 day 70 of clone run, all Grape Candy Skunk

#7 day 70 of clone run, Raspberry incense with a earthy funkyness lurking

Last of the 4 girls I ran back in the clone run.  #6 holds the best smell, imagine a bath tub full of boysenberry/grape syrup when out from under the surface a skunk pops its head out to say hi.

Mendo Purple Urkle #6 day 70 of clone run

Mendocino purple urkle #1 2nd clone run day 55

Mendocino Purple Urkle #1 and since I’m never happy with the way purple contrasts in photo’s, I stuck a nug of a green afghan x for comparisons.  I keep hearing back Boysenberry incense on flavor from my testers, I would have to agree.

Smoke Test:

Mendocino Purple Urkle #1

Appearance- Dark purple throughout with a nice layer of trichs to make her shine.

Smell- Grape perfume incense that really lingers

Taste- Nice Grape incense that expands quite nicely on inhale followed by a coating of grape followed by a sweet incensey cloud.

Effect- Pain easing body with a nice mellow indica type of medicine to ease you into your soft couch.

Overall very happy with the line, nice selection of true purples to search through. Very indica dom, slow vegging and slow overall growers but some of the most over the top bag appeal with sweet grape perfume incense smells to be found.
